You can save on personal training by training three times a week. This seems to go against the conventional wisdom. I have heard it so many times “I can’t afford to train 3 times a week, it is too expensive. When you take a closer look at the different scenarios, you will discover that it is at least the same cost, and most likely even less expensive for you to train three times a week in comparison to once or twice a week. First of all, does it make sense to train three times a week? Some people have asked me how many times they should use a personal trainer per week to get results.
As a personal trainer it seems self-serving to make a suggestion because obviously the more times per week the more business I get. So what I did was go online to see what people in the general community and look at how many times they need a personal trainer to reach the results. I wanted to find a discussion where people were talking about what they needed to achieve their goals with a personal trainer. I found this discussion on Reddit and I’m going to share it with you in the link below. It appears from the discussion that both clients and personal trainers agree that three times a week with a personal trainer is optimal. This is the sweet spot for new trainees and the amount of sessions per week if you need if you are just starting off. So if training three times a week is the right number of times for those of you who are just starting to train, how does it compare in expense to training once or twice a week?
How Can it Be that You Save on Personal Training By Training Three Times Per Week?
What is most interesting to me is that if you actually look carefully at the cost the personal trainer over time it is actually less expensive in the long run if you use a personal trainer 3 times a week for 3 months.
Let me explain; if you use a personal trainer as a suggested in the Reddit discussion below and then down to or less per week and the personal trainer cost (just an easy number to work with) $100 per hour then you will be spending $300 per week or $1,200 per month for 3 months which is 3,600.
Keep in mind that you will likely achieved your goal in 3 months.
Now let’s see you go twice a week you now 5 months to achieve your goals. Using the same price per hour you will now be spending $200 per week but for a period of 5 months which works out to a total of $4,000. This means to achieve the same goals it will cost you $4000.
Now if you take the example of using the personal trainer once per week, this works out approximately $400 per month. If it now takes you example 8 months to achieve your goal because you are only seeing your personal trainer once per week then the total cost is it going to be approximately $4,800. Not only that, it will take you 8 months or perhaps even longer to achieve your goal.
You can also save on personal training by negotiating with the personal trainer. If they know that you are going to train three times a week and keep them busier for three months, they will be more likely to give you a break on the price and let you get away with $90 per session which saves you an additional $360 dollars.
Sometimes in life we think we are saving money by paying less in the short-term. Those of us that are wise know that sometimes paying more in the short-term saves us money in the long term. In the end it is less expensive to train for a shorter period of time with a trainer and do it three times a week. We also reach our goals much sooner and get the internal rewards for having been successful.
However, I said before it seems self-serving for a personal trainer to talk on how to save on personal training by suggesting more frequent training so I have included the link to the Reddit discussion below and I encourage you to online and see what people are saying about the amount of times you should see a personal trainer per week when you are starting off. Three times is optimal, twice a week is borderline and once a week not enough.
I compare this to thinking about going to school. If you are going to university your tuition might $10,000 per year if you go full time. You will be immersed in the experience and you can expect to graduate in four years and then move on to other things. If you decided to go to school on a part time basis that four years could turn into 10 or twelve years. You would actually end up spending more than the $10,000 because the tuition cost per course increases every year and you are adding six to eight years on to the time to graduate. This is to say that doing something less for a longer period of time usually costs you more in the long run and it takes you much longer to achieve your goal.
