Three Meals a day (NOT!) – Eat Smaller amounts of Food More Frequently.
Eating three meals a day is a recent development for us humans. It may seem very normal now, but the foundation of these eating habits has strange roots. The practice came from the European settlers to North American. They watched the indigenous people and determined that it was more important to have a timing of each meal. They saw that the indigenous people had what appeared to be unorganized eating habits. They generally ate with they were hungry. The indigenous people in North America had what would be considered now to be very healthy eating habits. After the industrial revolution, organized work meant that we had meals before work, once at work and after work, hence breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Abigail Carroll authored the book Three Squares:The Invention of the American Meal.“ The National Review explains how Carroll posits that the Europeans view the indigenous eating practices as uncivilized. They believed that “Civilized people ate properly and boundaried their eating, thus differentiating themselves from the animal kingdom, where grazing is the norm. So our entire cultural eating schedule is based in the roots of wanting to be different.
As it turns out, the animals have it right. Our eating habits are one of the greatest determinants of health, and Cornell University researchers say it’s better to avoid going without food for more than three to four hours. It appears that once again when we as humans attempt to organize our lives and impose unnatural ideals, it doesn’t work out so well for us. Keep your cupboards and fridge stocked with healthy snacks and eat when you are hungry.
